The Stranger by Albert Camus The book I read was called The Stranger, written by Albert Camus. The book is famous throughout the world and has been translated into many different languages and texts. The original was called L'Étranger and was written in French in 1942. The plot of this story involved a man in his twenties and thirties. The man's name is Meursault. At the beginning of the novel, Meursault is informed that his mother has died in the nursing home where he occupied her. Meursault's income could no longer afford to care for his mother; so he placed her in a nursing home. Meursault left his job and went to the nursing home where he died to pay his respects and participate in the funeral ceremonies. When he arrived at the nursing home, the undertaker carried Meursault to his mother's coffin. The director asked him if he wanted to see her and he quickly replied to keep the coffin closed. Meursault sat in the room and nearly consumed an entire pack of cigarettes as he stared blankly at his mother's coffin. At the actual funeral, Meursault shows no signs of the normal emotion that would normally be induced by such an event. When Meursault gets home he decides to take another day off and relax on the beach. On his way out he sees an old man beating his dog and cursing him mercilessly. Normally most people would be annoyed by a man hitting a little dog, but Muersault watches as if nothing bad is happening. When Meursault is at the beach he meets a girl, named Marie, who he finds very attractive. Meursault and Marie become very close. As the story progresses, they begin to take part in sexual activities. Marie tells Muersault that she loves him and asks if he loves her back too.
