Have you ever thought that books that deal with sex, obscene language and immoral topics could make a good book? The Young Catcher in the Rye was placed on the banned reading list for exactly these reasons. The book was primarily disapproved between 1966 and 1975 in nearly every school district in the United States. The book was said to be so bad that in 1960 a teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma was fired for assigning the book to an 11th grade English class. Despite some opposition to the novel, however, J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye should be on a freshman reading list because it provides a crystal-clear picture of what the world is like in violence, sex, and obscenity, and the book it also teaches the motives of lying and deception. The world is not perfect, it is full of violence, sex, obscenity and immoral values. It's true, believe it or not, the world is indeed full of these negative traits of humanity. Holden Caulfield is no exception to having these traits. The following quote explains why: “'Really? Why? I'm not kidding, are they better for sex and everything?' 'Listen. Let's make one thing clear. Tonight I refuse to answer Caulfield's typical questions. When the hell are you going to grow up?' I didn't say anything for a while. I let it drop for a while. Then old Luce ordered another martini and told the bartender to make it much drier” (Salinger 189). Parents are no better protectors of children if they can't let children face the truth about how terrible the bad side of the world is. Sex and libations are common bad habits of the human race. If a parent does not allow a child to confront these bad ideals, is he or she doing the child a favor? No, she or he is not. Ultimately the child will sooner or later discover these topics from a bad source of information. Not only is there sex and drinking in the world, but there is also violence. The book also contains violent scenes, such as the following: “'Now shut up, Holden, damn it, I'm warning you,' he said. I had really made him angry. "If you don't shut up, I'll bang you one." “Get your dirty, stinky idiot knees off my chest.” “If I leave myself alone, keep your mouth shut?»?
