Introduction Looking from space, you can clearly see that the earth is blue. Covering more than 70% of the Earth's surface, the oceans are a sanctuary for millions of species. Around all seven continents and at every latitude and longitude are a variety of habitats ranging from tropical coral reefs to arid, subzero plains. These ecosystems have different temperatures, salinity, currents and biodiversity that allow for a unique habitat (Shah, Anup). With such a diversity and range of habitats, the Earth's ocean provides up to 95% of the habitable space on earth (For free? Enhance the natural environment.). Many scientists believe that there are more than 2.5 million different species in the oceans alone. From small alien fish in trenches to blue whales roaming the open ocean, each species has its own unique ecological niche – a specific location in an elaborate interconnected system (What is Biodiversity). Unfortunately, the oceans have become a landfill and an unlimited resource for society. Dragging in net after net of consumable fish, the oceans are being damaged as society continues to harvest uncontrollably. If people continue to exploit and abuse marine resources, the decline in biodiversity will cause widespread ecosystem collapse and harm society. Overfishing With a population exceeding seven billion people and a greater percentage relying on fish as a source of protein, the demand for seafood has increased exponentially. To satiate societies' hunger, the fishing industry continues to expand its fleet and fishing area. In 2011, the global fishing industry harvested approximately 178 million tons from the ocean. About 2.5 trillion fish were destroyed.......middle of paper......m, Paul A., Edward H. Huijbens, Stephen L. Wearing).ConclusionThe Earth's ocean is a wonderful place . He not only provides for himself but also for the animals that live on the earth. Over the past few centuries, society lacked the knowledge needed to truly understand the impact it had on the environment. We have exploited and abused the resources provided by the ocean and wreaked havoc on the ecosystem. The current generation of young adults has a different mindset. Today's political leaders are trying to reverse the damage they have caused, and to some extent the ocean is recovering. However, the current generation is focusing on how to prevent these harms from occurring rather than how to fix them. Although irreversible damage has occurred, by making the right changes to society we can bring enormous benefits to the ocean and start taking care of its resources..
