Canada's Role in the Kyoto AgreementThe Kyoto Protocol is a binding international agreement, begun in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997. As of June 2013, there there were a total of 192 parties to the agreement. After the Kyoto Protocol, Canada was no longer among them. Canada was one of the first to sign the agreement, in 1998; more than 4 years later, Canada formally approved the Kyoto Agreement, in 2002 ("CBC.ca - Timeline: Canada and Kyoto"). This meant that Canada would have to reduce its emissions by 6% below 1990 levels (461 Mt), by 2012. Despite some efforts, Canada failed to meet these requirements and actually increased total emissions by about 24% by 2012. year 2008. Canada formally withdrew from the Kyoto Agreement in 2011, avoiding sanctions and future harm (“CBC News in Depth: Kyoto”). Canada's withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol was a good decision, reducing emissions was an unattainable goal, considering the costs, time, inequity, dependency and technological progress. The Kyoto Protocol was created to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are affecting the Earth. The project is extremely expensive and ineffective. The protocol could benefit the world in the distant future, but it is not worth it for a country to become poor. Furthermore, if tackling the issue requires cooperation across the globe, developing countries should not be left out. The Kyoto Protocol raises many concerns, and if something is going to have such a strong impact on our economy, it should not raise any concerns and should be foolproof. To demonstrate the lack of effectiveness, the economic consequences must first be discussed. Over the years, in an attempt to achieve its goal, Canada has spent an enormous amount of money to reduce...... half the paper.... ..is not the solution. To tackle this problem, everyone needs to be involved and there needs to be a clear and defined plan for how we will work together to make reducing carbon emissions a reality, because it is possible.
