The novel Crime and Punishment is one of the greatest creations of Fyodor Dostoevsky which had a huge influence on future world literature. It is a social, psychological, philosophical and ideological novel. The work was written by Dostoevsky in a difficult period for Russia, when there were conflicts between political opinions, when new ideas were still weak and old ideas began to collapse. According to Boris Lichman, PD, Russian historian, the movement of Russian society towards a capitalist system in the second half of the 19th century led to the destruction of villages, the impoverishment of populations, the aggravation of social conflicts and, as a consequence, the increase of crimes (Lichman). Therefore, this topic of crime became very popular in the writings of Russian literature of that period. The main norms of the heroes were Christian commandments such as “do not kill”, “do not steal”, “do not fornicate”. When a main hero broke a rule, he inevitably collided with society. Therefore, Fyodor Dostoevsky wanted to prove that a human being, who committed a crime without taking into account reason, would not change the world, and that pure Christian love and self-sacrifice was the only path to the transformation of society. The idea to write the novel came to Dostoevsky during his exile in 1859. He would share all his inner experience of exile. During that time he met many strong personalities who helped him change his previous beliefs. He hatched his idea for six years. On 8 June 1965 Dostoevsky proposed his new novel entitled "Pyanenky" to Andrej Kraevskij, a Russian publisher and journalist, but Kraevskij refused because the editorial team did not have the money. On July 2, due to lack of money, Dostoevsky had to enter into an agreement with another publisher, Fyo...... middle of paper ......le, and no evil can be justified by the happiness of millions of people ; it could not be built on blood, violence and tyranny. Only a humane and refined society could arise and achieve happiness for the majority of people. However, despite the heavy darkness of Crime and Punishment written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, there was a light in the life of the main hero, in his moral strength and courage to find a way to truly serve people.
