Topic > The Pros and Cons of Fracking - 1102

Fracking and the supply chain for a fracking site to be built releases pollutants into the air. A fracking site in Wyoming has seen outrageous pollution levels, “…with Wyoming ozone levels recorded at 124 parts per billion…The healthy upper limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency is 75 parts per billion” (Joe Hoffman). The fracking supply chain contributes to air pollution. “There are approximately 400 tank trucks used to transport water and supplies to and from the sites” (Linda Dong). Fracking companies should not be allowed to escape national environmental laws because they are established for our safety. The government must enforce the standards established by the EPA for the health of US citizens and for the preservation of our ozone layer. With an additional 1.65% of pollution from fracking, people are at greater risk of cancer, organ damage, nervous system disorders and even death. Our ozone layer, which is not only tarnished by fracking, but also by the process of building a fracking site, must be looked after. With government attention to making sure fracking companies comply with national environmental laws for pollution levels, there will be a decrease in negative externalities and help prevent a tragedy of the commons. Fracking has also been reported to have effects
