Topic > The use of symbols in "The Masque of the Red Death"

Everyone fears their own death, that's why some people do everything to escape it. In Edgar Allan Poe's story, “The Masque of the Red Death,” this fear is experienced by everyone. In the story, a prince named Prospero and his people try to evade the Red Death through confinement and isolation in the prince's abbey. However, no wall can stop death as it is inevitable and unavoidable. Throughout the story, Poe uses symbols such as the rooms, the masked figure, and the clock to convey the theme that no one can escape death. The imagery of the rooms used in the story has a major contribution to the theme conveyed. Prince Prospero's Abbey is made up of seven different and symbolic rooms. The fact that there were seven rooms is in itself symbolic because there are seven stages in life. Poe uses the number of stanzas based on the stages of life so that the first stanza symbolizes birth and the seventh stanza symbolizes death. Furthermore, the rooms are arranged from east to west, the same way time is measured. The sun rises in the east, where the first stanza is located and symbolizes birth, while the last stanza is located in the west, where the sun sets, and symbolizes death. The colors of the rooms also have great significance in the way they are arranged. The easternmost room was blue, signifying youth and life, while the westernmost room was black, signifying death. The importance of the seven rooms lies in the seventh and, therefore, the most vividly described room, since it is the last room and symbolizes the end: “The seventh apartment was tightly wrapped in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls, falling in heavy folds onto a carpet of the same material and...... half of paper...k to do so. In Prospero's abbey there were seven rooms, which symbolized the seven stages of life. The easternmost room is blue, symbolizing life, while the westernmost room is black, symbolizing death, just as the sun rises in the east, symbolizing light and life, and sets in the west, symbolizing darkness and death. This room is abandoned and unoccupied by the guest because it only reminds him of his death. Also, the masked figure symbolizes death in such a way that it finds all the guests who tried to escape it, so the masked figure symbolizes the Red Death or the plague. Finally, the clock in the story is used to remind people of death. When the clock strikes every hour, everyone turns pale and is reminded that their time is coming. In conclusion, Poe effectively uses symbols to convey his theme that no matter how intelligent one is, no one can escape death.
