Topic > An evaluation and analysis of the marriage dance program

Introduction In this article, a further evaluation and analysis will be conducted on the marriage dance (MD) group work conducted by Fei Yue Family Service Center (FYFSC). Suggested improvements to some aspects of practice are also mentioned. MD was introduced by FYFSC as a response to the service gap in marriage enhancement for non-religious people. The use of group work as an intervention technique is an alternative method for empowerment compared to individual case work. This is because social workers are able to teach members through working out group dynamics. Additionally, it also allows members to work through the perceived isolation of having to deal with their problems alone. Pre-Group Work Planning Using the social work planning model with the Kurland and Salmon groups, most of the eight components were considered and covered adequately. This ensured that MD was able to run smoothly in the medium (Kurland and Salmon, 1998). However, I believe that three areas that need to be further addressed are those of purpose, structure and pre-group contact. PurposeMD was conceived with the intention of working with couples who are experiencing marital problems and want to work towards marital renewal, a greater level of intimacy and commitment in their marriage. However, couples who are on the verge of divorce can also participate, using it as a “desperate” attempt to save their marriage. Due to the varying severity of marital problems faced, discrepancies may arise in dealing with couples. The result is a group purpose that is no longer clear and has become diluted to encompass the distinct goals of all members. It is essential that MD workers evaluate and re-establish a clear purpose… middle of the paper… ce indicators (KPIs). It was stated that workers currently evaluate teamwork based on the MD's initial program design KPIs. For example, the initial budget criteria were based on the weekly format and the participation of 12 couples and not 6. In consideration of professional competence, workers should re-plan this budget as they are responsible for demonstrating that the proposed practice meets the established criteria. Risk of harmAlthough no cases of violent-aggressive behavior have been observed during MD, many of the couples enrolled in the program have a history of domestic violence. Since the safety of members is of paramount importance, group leaders should still have a contingency plan should such a case occur. This can range from having to take the abusive member aside to calm them down to more severe measures such as calling the police.
