The Sisterhood of the Traveling PantsAnn BrasharesWhen one pair of jeans can work on four different best friends and make each look unique and special, that's when you know you've got a truly remarkable piece of clothing. The pants in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, by Ann Brashares, are what make the book complete. Even though this novel is a "girls" book; this is what makes the characters more relatable, the plot interesting in an almost gossipy way, and the theme, which is the importance of friendship. The characters are recognisable. Carmen is the most caring of the four friends and recognizes the importance of friendship more than others. Carmen is half Puerto Rican and half white, living with her single Latina mom. Throughout the book she has to deal with the feeling of being replaced when she discovers that her father is engaged to a white woman who already has two teenage children. Bridget is an athlete, spending the summer at a soccer camp in Mexico. She is impulsive and reckless, but her good humor helps her make friends quickly. Lena is the shy one. He travels to Greece to spend the summer with his grandparents. She is calm and happy when she can be alone. She doesn't like boys very much, because through experience she has learned that they usually only like her for her looks. Finally there is Tibby, the rebel. The only one of the 4 girls stuck at home, she considers it simple and boring. The plot behind the story is interesting. The book begins with Carmen purchasing a pair of jeans. Magically, they fit together perfectly with Carmen, Lena, Tibby and Bridget, even though they have different body types. When they all go their separate ways, the girls ship the pants to whoever needs them, once... center of the card... ranger. However, Bailey's overall happy outlook on life rubs off on her. Lena needs her friends to look past her beauty. Without them, she retreats, deep in thought. It's her friends who remind her that she is more than her looks. Bridget is the least open about friendship, but she needs it just as much as the others. With no close friends around, Bridget's daredevil attitude is fun and exciting, but no one thinks to tell her to slow down. He goes too far and finds himself in a bad situation, but his friends are there to make the situation better. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a truly touching story about four best friends and their lives. The interesting plot and theme of the recognizable characters make it a really good and well written book. Good friends are an important part of life and without them life can't be as fun and these four girls know it for sure.
