MONOTONE LIFE AGAINST PLEASUREJust because everything is pre-planned, life in Utopia is so monotonous that people have had to adopt a pleasure-based approach to life, based only on happiness : "In fact, they do everything to entertain people."²⁹, "Here they seem a little too inclined to have a hedonistic view, because according to them human happiness consists largely or entirely in pleasure."³⁰That l hedonism is not rooted in the pure and simple pleasure of self-amusement and self-entertainment. There are higher pleasures that must be pursued, because that is what God would have them do. First, they must strive for the well-being of others as a consequence of their utilitarian ethics, which is considered one of those high pleasures. However utopians, in contradiction to their non-individualistic system, also seek pleasure for themselves, which is a surprising aspect of their understanding since they have almost no notion of self as argued above. They, being extremely good at making excuses, have excellent reasons for doing so: “…nothing could be more human, or more natural for a human being, than alleviating the suffering of others…So why shouldn't it be equally natural to do the same thing for themselves? Either it is bad to enjoy life, ...or, if it is good for others, ...why shouldn't charity begin at home?”³¹, “if Nature says you must be kind to others, she cannot look back on next moment and you'll say you need to be cruel to yourself." despising their own beauty... unless they did so for the benefit of other people or society, in the hope of receiving some greater pleasure from God in return. Their pre-planned lives and perceptions of utility maximization are faced when it comes to fulfilling one's duties towards other "particles" of society, despite their reluctance. If a man is so ill that there is no hope of a cure, for example, the utopians ask him to euthanize him, which basically means they don't want to care for him, he is no longer welcome and should die.
