A Multifaceted Interpretation of SulaIn the Apocalypse in African-American Fiction, Maxine Lavon Montgomery weaves a multifaceted interpretation of Sula by Toni Morrison . Although Montgomery makes a very detailed argument putting forward several significant ideas that are worth acknowledging, his final conclusions exceed what can be clearly supported in Sula. Montgomery's first major title of "Modern Chaos and Ancient Paradigms" (75) outlines his belief that "natural disasters, unexpected deaths, and ongoing racist oppression serve as bitter reminders of the almost tragic dimensions of life, because to be black in America is to experience calamity as an ever-present reality, living on the brink of apocalypse" (75) .
