Destiny, brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those who believe they were not born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their “True North”. The book, written by Bill George and co-author Peter Sims, collects a series of interviews with 125 managers, from Howard Schultz of Starbuck to Dan Vasella of Novartis. Interviewees guide readers through their journey to becoming the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles, personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager demonstrate the True North thesis that no one is born a leader and there is no path to becoming one. The book is divided into three sections: 1) Leadership is a journey 2) Discover your authentic leadership 3) Empowering people to lead. Before providing an overview of each section, it is important to define an authentic leader. Becoming an authentic leader means bringing “people together around a shared purpose and empowering them to step up and lead authentically in order to create values for all stakeholders.” (xxxi). Bill George identified the following five dimensions that every authentic leader should understand:1. Pursue a purpose with passion2. Practicing solid values3. Lead with your heart4. Establish lasting relationships5. Demonstrate self-discipline.Part I: Leadership is a JourneyThe Journey to Authentic LeadershipAfter interviewing all 125 managers, Bill George and Peter Sims found a common thread in each of their interviews: Their life stories influenced their passion for leadership. After the experience… halfway through the paper… I will no longer be seen as authentic. True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership came into my life at the most perfect time. I'm graduating this May and now it's time to ask myself what I want to do for the rest of my life. What will my legacy be? When I die, I want to know that I have made a difference in the world. So many graduates take the first offer or the offer with the most money, but I'll make sure it's something I feel like I'm going to do; It's something I'm passionate about. This is a great book for everyone; a recent graduate or an experienced professional. It teaches us the importance of being proactive and passionate in our careers. At the end of each chapter, the back of the book also provides readers with a series of questions to reflect on our life story, motivations, abilities, etc. What will be your legacy?
