Lorrie Moore authored three novels, four short story collections, and one children's book from 1985 to 2009. In a profile on Moore, done just before the release of Who Will Run the Frog Hospital , Lee states, "Since 1984, Moore has taught at the University of Wisconsin, as a professor of English, and writes at her own pace" ("About Lorrie Moore: A Profile"). Moore acknowledged in the same article: "I have rarely felt pressure to publish and I really enjoy writing what I want, at a natural pace" (Lee). When the novel A Gate at the Stairs was released, it had been fifteen years since Moore's last novel in 1994. The long lapse of time has caused quite a stir from every review, however, while most critics speak highly of Moore herself. , there weren't many harmonious thoughts about the book. The reviews changed tone from one praising the book, to another asking whether reading the 322-page novel was “worth it” (Jones 53). Moore is a talented author; maybe one day he'll produce a book worthy enough for the canon, but not this one. Moore does not have a large collection of published writings, but he appears to have a good following. His works of fiction are considered young adult-adult books, as is A Gate at the Stairs, but he began his published career by writing "Self Help" (1985) at the age of twenty-six, "comprising almost entirely of stories taken from his master's thesis". ” (“About Lorrie Moore: A Profile” Lee). Ron Charles, the author of the Washington Post review, talks about the time gap in Moore's novels and makes a bold statement about her work and what others they can now get from Moore. Charles observes: "...an entire generation of readers has grown up thinking about her or... middle of paper... is thrown into the midst of this whirlwind of things she isn't exactly capable of to face" or even understand? After reading the reviews, I'm still not sure myself. Works Cited Charles, Ron. "With new twists, Moore paints both darkness and an age of enlightenment." Washington Post: 02 September 2009.
