Family is often the first form of socialization an individual achieves. It also occurs before daycare, formal education, and peer influence. Family also influences an individual's life chances through racial/ethnic history and socioeconomic history. My family is relatively small compared to most. In August 2015, all of my great-grandparents passed away, leaving only three generations alive. My family has been consistently middle class throughout society, except in cases of situational poverty such as divorce, widowhood, the great depression, and repression. Starting on my maternal side with my great grandparents Douglas Woodard and Anna Williams. Douglas, also known as Grandfather, on the farm was employed in the army and also spent his time in Many things have been lost over the years or forgotten entirely. My great-grandparents Thelma and Oral Chester can be found in Federal Senses from 1940. Neither of them went to college or served in the military. Both were hard workers and worked where there was money to be made. My great-grandparents Blanche and Edward Kavich were a different story though. Edward joined the Navy. Here he can be seen at age 18 in his Navy uniform. Early in his Navy career he was stationed in the Philippines where he spent his free time preparing this item to bring home. It was sown together with Japanese silk strung on Japanese parchment paper. Below is an image of the ship he was on. By not spending his money at sea, Edward was able to send money home to Blanche. Blanche put her money in the bank and lived off what she earned at the restaurant where she worked. He never had more than a middle school education, but he had a good idea about how to handle it. Sociology suggests that this would be due to the skin color we have. White privilege has allowed my family to get better jobs, better education, and better economic advantages than people of color. After looking at my family I can see how wealth has been passed down from generation to generation. Each generation has become richer, even if only minimally. Each generation has been able to obtain an education equal to or better than the previous one. I will be the first in my family tree to earn a college degree. Thanks to my father's wealth and hard work I didn't have to buy my first vehicle, but he gave me a reliable vehicle that lasted six years. Therefore, when I was ready to purchase my second vehicle, I was able to purchase a new one. My father could afford a house and paid for it, so he decided to buy a foreclosed house that we could renovate together. He later sold the house to me for the total sum of $79,000, exactly the price he bought it for plus the money he invested in it. It is worth $92,000. I was able to apply for a credit card at age 19, probably because of my skin color and the fact that my father had a good credit score because he was taught money management. I am able to travel the world because I have family living across the country and I have the ability to pay to get out of the country. Without family money and a father who gave me white skin and knowledge of money management I
