Good and evil in Bless Me, Ultima In Rodolfo Anaya's novel, Bless Me, Ultima, the author uses different settings to develop the sense of good and evil in Antonio. this would be Rosie's, the local brothel. For Antonio, Rosie tempted his brothers and was the cause of their sins. In one of Antonio's dreams, three figures "silently called" (p. 65) Antonio to the "house of sinful women" (p. 156). Antonio saw his brothers enter and told Andrea, the last of the three to enter, not to enter. Andrew told Tony that he would wait until Tony lost his innocence and only then would Andrew go to the brothel. So, for Antonio, seeing Andrew in the "house of evil" (p. 156) was a confirmation of Tony's lost innocence and Tony wanted to remain innocent forever. Another example of Tony's evolving sense of good and evil through the use of setting is Tony's house. For him, his home provided him with warmth and security. This was due to the people who lived in the house. Antonio's father creates a sense of protection in the home. When Tenorio and his men arrive at the house to take Ultima away, Tony's father "would not allow any man to invade his house" (p. 123). This gave Tony confidence that as long as his father was around, he would be protected. Antonio's mother made the house a loving and caring place to live. He would always be Antonio's child and give him the affection he needed whenever he needed it. The morning after Tony saw Lupito killed, Ultima tells Tony's mother not to be too hard on Antonio; had a rough night last night. His mother hugs Tony and holds him, saying that "he's just a boy, still a child" (p.28). Virgo also makes the atmosphere of Antonio's house serene and protected. Tony loves the Virgin Mary because she “always forgave” (p. 42). Tony thought she was "filled with a quiet, peaceful love" (p.42) that she filled the house with. The most important person who contributed to the goodness of Antonio's house was Ultima. He made Antonio feel as if his presence filled the house with security, love and a sense of protection. When Tony saw Lupito being killed, it was Ultima who calmed him down. Whenever he had a nightmare, Ultima was there to comfort Antonio and "[he] could sleep again" (Pg.
