UTTARAKHAND DISASTER CASE STUDY The state of Uttarakhand is extensively covered by high Himalayan mountains comprising the Himadri and Shivalik ranges. The existence of such mountainous terrain in the state makes it prone to many natural disasters such as landslides and floods. Furthermore, the fact that the entire area of Uttarakhand is classified as Seismic Zone IV makes it prone to large earthquakes. Several major and minor rivers originate in the hills of Uttarakhand. Two major rivers, the Ganges and the Yamuna, originate from the upper reaches of the Gangotri and Yamunotri glaciers respectively. states like Kedarnath, Rudraprayag and Gaurikund etc. they recorded rainfall up to 300% more than average.
