I chose violence in schools because I know many people who have been affected by it and the topic interests me. Almost every school will claim that it is a school that will provide a safe environment for all children, but almost every day there are stories where a student commits suicide or another student simply “lost their mind.” He opens fire in a school building on anyone in his path. Most of these students have been victims of school violence in one way or another. Schools should be a place where students (and teachers) feel safe. They should not fear for their safety. Unfortunately, this is usually not the case. Students come to school with fears of being teased, bullied, and physically or mentally abused. As teachers or future teachers, we need to educate ourselves on how to ensure student safety in and out of school. Most students, parents, and educators do not think that violence can or is happening in their school, but violence is occurring in almost every case. every school. School violence does not take socioeconomic status, race, or anything else into consideration. School violence is a factor that affects equal opportunities. Violence not only poses a threat to individual students, but “disrupts the learning process and has a negative effect on students, the school itself, and the broader community” (CDC 2013). One of the scariest things, as an educator and even as fellow peers, is watching violence take place. Most acts of violence occur in the presence of a teacher, so it can sometimes make school violence difficult to address. While school violence is a factor affecting equal opportunities, statistics have shown that children from low socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to engage in acts of violence or experience violence committed against… middle of paper… and they progress as it is now, it is likely to stay here. If anything, technology will improve and become more advanced and may even open up more opportunities for cyberbullying and school violence. Violence in schools is on the rise across the nation, and educators need to be educated on how and when to confront bullies and victims. Teachers need to pay attention to any warning signs or anything out of the norm and be able to prevent bullying before it happens if possible. Schools should be a place where every student feels safe and comfortable. Teachers can be proactive by incorporating anti-bullying into their lessons and daily routines. School violence is a real problem, and it seems to be more prevalent in our schools today than ever, and with precautions and preventative actions perhaps we as educators can help put an end to school violence.!
