Domestic violence is a complex problem that regularly affects society. Court systems across the United States have attempted to create regulations to protect victims of domestic abuse. Additionally, there are sparsely spread small, nonprofit organizations across the United States that attempt to supplement jurisdictional protection with additional resources. However, domestic abuse appears to be much larger than any services these systems can maintain. Victims of domestic violence suffer from harmful problems that even the justice and nonprofit systems have yet to overcome, and as society advances, more and more problems seem to arise. Philadelphia's legal system has provided what is known as "Protection from Abuse Order (PFA)". Under state law, abuse is defined as attempting or causing physical harm, creating fear of bodily harm, sexual assault, false imprisonment or stalking. The PFA protects victims from interactions, abuse, stalking, and harassment by the abuser (Family Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association, 2009). Additionally, due to the family complications that can arise from domestic abuse, PFAs can also provide support, custody, and monetary compensation for children. If the victim is eligible and the PFA is issued, it lasts only 36 months (3 years), but can be extended if circumstances make it necessary (Family Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association, 2009). While this PFA seems useful in its intentions, the more technical details of a PFA are questionable. As in many other cities, in Philadelphia a PFA petition can only be filed in Family Court during business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In most cases, however, the common working hours for an employee are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; if the victims are linked to...... middle of paper ...... the extractors seem to be in front of them.
