Domestic vs International Adoption Think back to your first memory. Are you making cookies with your mother? Are you throwing a baseball with your dad? Now, imagine your childhood if you hadn't grown up with a loving family who supported you and cared for you. Alternatively, perhaps you therefore grew up in a negative environment; you understand what it means to feel unloved. What does this have to do with adoption? There are over 1.5 million children without families in the United States. 1.5 million children don't know what it's like to feel like they have a purpose. The only way to solve this problem is through adoption because it provides that positive environment that the child never had. Through my research, I have found that domestic adoption is a better option for families in the United States, compared to international adoption. One of the main reasons it is a better option is that national adoption is ultimately much less expensive. A second reason why national adoption is better is that it is a quicker process. It's faster because parents don't have to go through stubborn and often very difficult adoption agencies. Furthermore, you do not need to travel to the foreign country several times to meet the agency and complete all the paperwork. The final reason why domestic adoption is the best option is that the child has the chance to meet his or her biological parents later in life. An internationally adopted child often has no family records or medical history. Although people say there is no need for adoption in the United States, according to the 2000 census, there are over 1.5 million children ready for adoption nationwide. ..... the best thing we can do for a child who otherwise would not have a family” (Reitz). Nonetheless, it is conclusive that domestic adoption is less likely to be equally stressful for both parents and child. Online collection of opposing points of view. Detroit: Gale, 2012.
