"He coldly but gently loosened her fingers from his arm and took her hand away from him." (Chopin 3) So Kate Chopin explains how angry Armand is and shows the images and anger he felt towards Desiree. In the story “Desiree's Baby” the author Kate Chopin explains how complicated love could be in the 19th century for interracial couples as it is today in our times. In “Desiree's Baby” Desiree and Armand seem to be in love with each other but before they became lovers they were best friends. Armand never thought he would fall in love with Desiree because of how long they had been friends. It was just that one day Desiree appeared standing there and suddenly Armand had this feeling. For example, Armand's mother did not approve of the marriage because Desiree did not know what race he was. Armand at the time didn't care what race Desiree was. (Chopin 1) “The number of interracial marriages has grown steadily since the 1980s and has increased rapidly in the early 21st century.” (Interracial Marriage 2) These days interracial couples are now more accepted and people have learned to come to terms with this. In the 19th century it was difficult for people of different races to be treated equally. Rich white people had treated people of color every way they felt they were treating them. In the story “Desiree's Baby” Desiree and Armand argue because their baby is a different color than their skin. Armand later discovers that he is of a different race and not Desiree. Armand's mother was with another man while she was with Armand's father. (Summary 1) Now you see the complication of interracial couples and how they face the same prejudice that couples faced in the 19th century. Sometimes in life things don't change. Interracial couples need to stay strong with each other and not give up
