“The primary use of a HER system is to facilitate clinical care, while improving the quality of healthcare delivery and patient safety , with particular attention to the workflows that support the delivery of care” (Laird-Maddox, Mitchell, & Hoffman, 2014, p. 1). However, no system is perfect and, compared to other technology application systems, Cerner has advantages, strengths and weaknesses. Cerner is considered the largest independent healthcare IT company in the world with continued satisfaction in user surveys. The advantages of Cerner are its longevity and functionality in hospital settings. It offers greater efficiency by providing instant, up-to-date information needed to make effective decisions. The strengths incorporated into this system are the ability to integrate medical devices such as cardiac monitors that transmit vital signs to the Cerner system and the ability to access information on portable devices such as smartphones and tablets through various applications. However, Cerner has a number of weaknesses. While it works perfectly within the hospital, doctors have complained that the system can run slowly and that order entry can take a long time because the search functions require exact language and require numerous clicks. Another problem with this technological application is the lack of integration capabilities with other systems. “Part of the driving force of the model (the use of technology to track and follow the flow of patients) came from the need to integrate electronic medical records throughout the healthcare system and share information with the network of referring hospitals” (Palma , 2013, p. 1). When compared to other health tech systems, Cerner performs well, but not that much
