Antigone: contradiction between morals In ancient Greece, new ideals emerged as answers to the complicated questions of life. These new beliefs centered on the expanding field of science. The man was focused on more than the Gods or celestial concerns. A government ruled by the people was suggested as opposed to a monarchy that had existed for many years. Freedom of religion was encouraged in city-states. These new ideals, although well intentioned, often conflicted with each other creating complex moral dilemmas. This was the case with Antigone, a play written by Sophocles in this age of change. In the play, Antigone and Creon fight a philosophical war that exemplifies the conflict existing in Greek ideals. They both based their actions on their beliefs about right and wrong. The conflict arose when the ideals that supported their actions clashed with each other, making it a contradiction of morals. Antigone's side of the conflict had a much more celestial approach, in contrast to the worldly path Creon chose to follow. Antigone feels that Creon is ignoring the laws of heaven through his edict. After being captured and brought to Creon, she tells him "I do not believe that your edicts are strong enough to nullify the unwritten immutable laws of God and heaven, you being but a man" (Sophocles page #). Antigone's firm opinion is one that supports the Gods and the laws of heaven. His reasoning is based on his belief that if someone is not given a proper burial, that person will not be accepted into heaven. Antigone was a very religious person and the acceptance of her brother by the Gods was very important to her. He felt that "It is against you and me that he made this order.
