Abortion is a moral choice. The essay “A Moral Choice” by Mary Gordan discusses many issues regarding abortion, the author is clearly pro-choice. The debate over when a fetus is alive (437) concerns when it is acceptable to have an abortion. As well as the morality of abortion judged by the media, religion, society and oneself. Women who have abortions are criticized for being cold and technological (441). These normal, everyday women have been making this moral decision for centuries. Although society needs to be realistic, our world is overpopulated and some women are not designed to have children. How do women make this moral decision? Many circumstances influence the decision whether to have an abortion or not. Gordan tells a few scenarios of some reasons why women choose to have abortions. One example involves a “yuppie” woman (437) who would not want to miss out on vacation or a promotion at work as a reason to have an abortion. Furthermore, it illustrates the scene of a teenage “ghetto girl” (437) who cannot say no to sex as a circumstance that causes an abortion. As well as representing the story of women who feel they cannot afford to have more children. Finally, it tells the case of women who have husbands or boyfriends who convince them to have an abortion so as not to affect their lifestyle. These scenarios are used as concrete reasoning for her statements “…abortion does not happen in a vacuum” (437) and “It is connected to other choices a woman makes throughout her adult life” (437). In short it talks about the concept that women choose to have an abortion due to circumstances congruent with the pregnancy. Gordon then goes on to discuss the concepts of when the fetus... middle of paper... makes moral decisions every day. These decisions are something we have to live with. We need to be able to wake up every morning and look in the mirror. I am on the side of the pro-choice movement since the name implies that each person must make their own choice.
