Gender Equality in Sports“All men are created equal” is a quote from Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence that has spanned many centuries and is still memorable today. What is missing from this sentence is equal rights for both women and men. Since this quote was written, times have changed drastically and women have gained these rights. While many people see equality between men and women in today's era, one place where it is not present is in the world of sports. Men and women have very different roles and expectations in the world of sport. Title IX was introduced to solve the problems, but despite this, unequal treatment between the sexes persists. Although Title IX resolved many conflicts revolving around girls' teams, not all schools followed the rules established for them. The continuation of unequal treatment of the sexes in the world of sports has resulted in unfair advantages for men, unequal sponsorship income, and mistreatment of athletes playing in the opposite sex that dominate sports. Outside of the educational aspects of gender equality, many professional sports teams are part of this mistreatment. Since men's sports are more popular, "men's highlights are shown daily on sports coverage networks, while women's highlights rarely appear" (McCullick). Popular sports television stations broadcast male-dominated sports more frequently than female-dominated sports. In another article the author addresses the topic of ski jumping at the Olympics. For women to be treated equally, they need to be given equal opportunities to showcase their strengths. Some women have gained the strength and ability to ski jump.
