28% of children in America lived with a single parent in 2013 (“Single Parenting”). Adolescents in these homes are more likely to exhibit behavioral problems, be in poverty and suffer from lack of food (Link). They are also more likely to take drugs, have sex before their peers, and experience abuse (Lauer, 2012). However, it should be noted that these are extreme cases that do not apply to many single-parent children. Personally, I can't relate to the severe challenges of other children in my situation, but through my mother I can relate to the challenges of single parents. She had the misfortune of raising me alone for eighteen years without child support, and I watched her suffer from all three types of overload, sometimes all at once. Thanks to her will to be strong, we have persevered through our difficult times and I hope one day to repay her for all she has given
