Tan is a Chinese-American woman who tells stories of ancient China that are rich in history and culture. Both novels have at least one strong central female character who tries to educate her daughter about their Chinese heritage and family roots. The plot of The Joy Luck Club shows this idea in every woman's story. The eldest generation consists of four women: Suyuan Woo, An-Mei Hsu, Lindo Jong and Ying-Ying St. Clair.
