Topic > Plot Summary of The Crucible - 1138

Proctor begins berating her, stating that she is paid to help his wife, not to spend time in the city. Mary insists however that her work is of the utmost importance, she is doing God's will. In a moment of apparent levity, she gives Elizabeth a doll, something she has been working on all day in rehearsals. Then with an air of great importance she tells John that she will no longer be commanded by him, she is doing God's work and is therefore a child. Furious, John begins to threaten her, at which point she, terrified, lets slip that Elizabeth's name appeared in the trials that day. Mary also explains to the shocked Procters that she saved Elizabeth's life and insisted to the judge that there was no witchcraft against them.
