True Faced: True LifeThe authors who wrote True Faced were right with their thoughts on how we often walk around constantly wearing a mask in an attempt to hide judgment from the outside world due to our imperfections. In the first chapter the authors say that many of us have “lost faith that we will always satisfy our audience, so we feel obliged to hide and wear a mask”. This immediately reminded me of one of my favorite articles written by Youth Specialties founder, Mike Yaconelli. He wrote an article called “Reader's Digest Selves” in which he talks about the problem of hiding our true selves and keeping the rest of the world away. In this article Yaconelli says: “This is why the “Good News” of the Gospel is so painful. Jesus wants to do much more than forgive our sins; It wants to capture our true self and allow us to face who we are. Not only is our true self full of sin, it is full of flaws and brokenness, and full of hope.” He then concludes this article with one of the truest statements ever by saying, “The power of the Church is not a parade of flawless people, but of a flawless Christ who embraces our flaws. The Church is not made up of all people, but rather of broken people who find wholeness in a Christ who broke himself for us.” I also really like that the authors give us the reasons why unresolved sin harms us deeply. I like practical and applicable books and this book is definitely both. I will always remember the similarities between the two rooms. The Room of Good Intentions is a place where I find myself stuck. My only two reactions to my sin were guilt for simply turning away from God or apathy due to the weakening effects of sin and the sin itself. When I think about sin, I have always thought of myself and God connected by a chain of links and every time sin enters my life, one of the links breaks and I am temporarily separated from God, which reminds me of what the authors they call it “The Great Disconnect.” .” I don't know how many times I told God how stupid I was and if only He would change me, when in reality He already has.
