They denote an opportunity, a new job and a new life. “Min saw the city with different eyes: each city was the possibility of a more desirable job than the one he had” (p. 75). The different factories are an integral part of his life, they determine who he is. However, Min can easily detach himself from a place because the significance of a particular factory is temporary. He becomes attached to the factory while working, but is quickly able to leave without any hesitation to a place with better opportunities. Changing jobs suddenly has no effect on Min or any of the other migrants.
