Topic > The Importance of Professional Development in Nursing…

Nursing students often assess skills, critical thinking fundamentals, and attributes that help in the transition from the student role to the professional arena. Professional development is individualized and varies from student to student. In order to develop the professional skills of the nurse, clinical experience in the real work context helps nursing students acquire the tools necessary for success. “Active involvement in education, service, and scholarship opportunities can help prepare you to address new roles and challenges in the workplace and broader nursing and healthcare settings” (Yoder-Wise., 2015 , p. 556). The practices that occur when a nursing student takes part in clinical Wound care is a supervised activity. The nursing instructor ensures proper technique to reduce the risk of student error by supervising wound care and assisting with wound assessment. Simple dressing changes may be performed without supervision at the discretion of the nursing instructor; this can only occur after the student nurse has demonstrated competent knowledge and techniques. Peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC) line dressing changes are supervised by the nursing instructor and should never be performed without supervision as this is a sterile procedure and correct technique is essential in preventing the introduction of pathogens in the patient. Licensed professional nurses do not require supervision when changing the PICC line dressing; this is a difference between the student role and the professional role. Insertion of a nasogastric (NG) tube is a procedure that must be performed under the supervision of the nursing instructor. If the placement of the NG tube is incorrect, a life-threatening problem can occur, especially if the NG tube is inserted into the lung instead of the stomach. Correct technique and positioning should be supervised by the instructor, although a portable chest x-ray and radiologist confirmatory report should confirm correct positioning. In the professional nursing role the insertion of an NG tube is not supervised, but the placement must still be confirmed by an x-ray and
