Portfolio Project: Tesla Motors Case StudyTesla Motors (Tesla), founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, is an automotive company focused on improving the electric vehicle market by creating electric vehicles with optimal performance for each class of consumer (Tesla Motors, 2015). To achieve such ambitious goals, Tesla Motors not only designs, but also produces and sells the company's electric vehicles itself (Hirsch, 2015). As an additional guarantee of quality, Tesla Motors also designs, manufactures, and sells electric vehicle powertrain components and battery products (Hirsch, 2015). However, despite the key role that Tesla's self-produced products play in the success of Tesla vehicles, the socially responsible company does not privatize. Aside from Musk's concise vision statement, Tesla has a truly inspiring mission statement: “At its core, Tesla Motors believes that electric cars should not be perceived as a sacrificial means of transportation. Tesla Motors has brought together the best of the automotive and technology worlds by permanently imprinting the image of electric cars as a step backwards in performance, efficiency and design" (Tesla Motors, Mainly and, apparently, is the goal of Tesla Motor to generate demand for Tesla vehicles (Andrade, Holloway, Payne, Roy & Sheffield, 2015), the demand will in turn drive leads to the Tesla sales team (Andrade, Holloway, Payne, Roy &). Corporate Strategy In 2006, Musk coined what would soon be considered Tesla Motors' overall long-term corporate strategy (Tesla Motors, 2015). It is about “building a wide range of models, including affordable family cars” (Tesla Motors, 2015). Musk explains the main reason why Tesla Motor's range of prices and vehicles are environmentally friendly. Musk (2006) goes on to express “the shift from an economy based on the extraction and combustion of hydrocarbons towards a solar electric economy, which I believe is the primary, but not exclusive, sustainable solution” (par.
