The character of Rita in Educating RitaIn the play Educating Rita, written by Willy Russell, there is a twenty-six year old student who is a hairdresser and is also a working class called Rita . Rita lives with her husband called Denny, however Rita and Denny love each other very much. Denny wants Rita to have a baby but Rita takes a pill to prevent having a baby, but Denny doesn't know this, but then finds out later in the game. Rita wants to explore herself and learn, that's why she goes to university to find a tutor to help her learn. Willy Russell faced some problems while trying to introduce the show. It had to introduce 2 main characters, Rita and Frank. It presented Rita as a really active and ambitious person. This is clearly seen when Rita enters Frank's room saying "I'm coming in, right? Is that the stupid knob on the door?" this clearly shows the audience that Rita can be pushy and even bossy. I think this gives the audience an idea of what Rita might be like in the rest of the show. Willy Russell also introduced Frank, his second main character. Frank is a teacher at the university and also a lecturer. In the first scene Willy Russell explained to the audience that Frank is not open and never does something when he wants it done on most occasions and this shows that he can be lazy. It is clearly seen when Rita struggles to get into Frank's room because the door handle is stuck and she can't get in, but then she pushes harder and finally manages to get in. Rita says, “You want me to fix it!” to Frank but then Frank gasps a little and replies, "yeah, I guess that was always my intention..." This shows the audience that Franks is always stuck in his room...... middle of paper.. .... take Frank's room out. When Frank opens the door he is surprised by what Rita is doing and didn't expect it to be done. In conclusion, I think Willy Russell did an effective way of starting the show because he had problems while trying to introduce the show, but despite all problems he had devices to support him and support his ideas and also help him make his game. Willy Russell introduced the characters Rita and Frank showing the audience what they are and how they will be during the show. Willy Russell also introduced the themes to the audience effectively, he showed the audience that Rita wants education and choices and that Frank wants relationships. Willy Russell makes the first scene dramatic and fun for the audience, which makes them stick around until the end, and I also think he started the show off well..
