Justin Cook is a student at Stanton College Preparatory currently in the eleventh grade. Cook is enrolled in an AP Psychology and is very interested in connecting the work he does in the classroom to the work in his other current classes. In this essay, Cook presents his case for why homosexuals should be allowed to serve in the American military primarily from a psychological perspective. Cook is an active supporter of human rights and gay equality. He is also an active supporter of the Trevor Project, America's only non-profit organization that operates a 24/7 suicide and crisis prevention helpline for young gay and questioning youth. Homosexuality: A Decisive Factor in US Armed Forces Participation. Today in America there are laws that are constantly changing. The morality of Americans and their views are changing as our nation grows and progresses over time. Yesterday's thinkers were today's thinkers, and this cycle continues, which is why improvements in the treatment of homosexuals are currently improving. Before the 12th century, homosexuality was not seen as something extraordinary. The Greeks and Romans regularly participated in homosexual acts and this was widely accepted due to their ideology of free love. The Sacred Band of Thebes is probably the most infamous example of homosexuals in the military in history, as they were set up to do just that. A group of 300 homosexual men made up of lovers and their beloved, united under a single bond.
