Topic > My Capstone Project - 649

As seniors we are assigned a Capstone project that is also tied to our community service hours. I chose a job that has something to do with my academic background. I work every Friday at Beatrice Mayes Institute Charter School with some of my coworkers. Coincidentally we all attended and graduated from this school together. We chose to work here not only because it is a familiar place, but also because we wanted to see what changes and positive influences we can make to this school. When we started we had no idea what the project would be. After our first day and our observations, we got the idea that these students would not take part in exercises or other activities. We want to help change the lazy mentality into an active and positive one. As students we have concluded that we can help turn this negative feedback into positive feedback. Our internship is a school that only started with kindergarten. The school was founded in 1966 by Mr Thomas Mayes, the late husband of Mrs Beatrice Mayes. The school has accumulated as a broad brand and has grown. This school has grown from kindergarten, to elementary school, to middle school. As current alumni we want to see the school grow and become something more than what we had when we attended school. We have seen this school grow and progress over the years. The school is named after the super assistant and co-founder, Mrs. Beatrice Mayes. He dreamed of starting a school and achieved his dream with the help of his family and friends. This school has instilled so many values and principles in every student who has ever attended there. Now let's take these values with us and try to help ist...... middle of paper ...... these teachers must replace other teachers they may call. We try to help as best we can. We have made some progress over the weeks. This is more than just community service hours, we are helping our community. Some of these kids are at risk of having diabetes and high cholesterol and we want to eliminate the percentage that increases. We convinced most of these children to play and have fun with their peers. We take children who mostly do nothing and convince them to participate. We have designed games and ways for them to have fun with their class and coaches. Almost every Friday we go to the coaches and ask where they need help. They joke with us and then give us a group of kids. We give them games and let them play, then they play these games with the whole class.
