Topic > Nationalism is Germany and Haiti - 1146

Nationalism is a strong sense of pride in one's country. These feelings can be provoked through a multitude of things. Throughout history, nationalist movements have started in several countries around the world. They achieved unification, independence and more pride. Although there have been many nationalist movements, each of the outcomes has been different. Germany is often seen as a very nationalistic country. Many Germanic peoples are proud of the country they call home. In the early 1800s there was no real “Germany”. It was actually a collection of small, ununited states that all spoke German, but were not a unified country. German nationalism erupted when Napoleon raided the Germanic lands from 1807 to 1812. In Napoleon's raids, he destroyed the Holy Roman Empire and transformed Germany into the Confederation of the Rhine. The people involved in these struggles wanted the independent states to be united to form a stronger and more united country. There was only one man suited to the arduous task of uniting all the states, and his name was Bismark. Otto von Bismark was a noble landowner who became Prime Minister of Germany in 1812. His policy of "blood and iron" allowed him to realize the goal of uniting Prussia with other states through the use of nationalism. Bismark was greatly influenced by a book called "The Prince" by Machiavelli. Bismark concluded that "realpolitik" (realistic politics) was necessary according to the needs of the state. Bismark also believed that rulers sometimes had to make rash and ruthless decisions to keep the state alive. Another event that unleashed a nationalist spirit in Prussia was the Franco-Prussian War. This was started due to conflicts between France and Prussia. The Spa......middle of paper......united brown gangs and led secret organizations who in turn led a rebellion that began in 1751 and continued until 1757. In 1804 the small island of Haiti declared itself independent thanks to the help of nationalist leaders. This slave revolution is said to be the only successful slave rebellion in the world. Many nationalist movements have occurred over the years. Some are successful, some are not, but both outcomes influence the region, gaining independence or losing it, unifying or remaining separate. The regions of Germany and Haiti have both benefited from nationalism. Germany became a unified nation with Bismark's help. Haiti abolished slavery and became an independent nation with the help of people like Toussant L'ouverture and other important people. Pride in their country definitely impacts how successful they are as a whole.
