As the end of the millennium approaches, it has become easier to escape a failed marriage. There are many divorce laws in place in the United States that allow for faster processing times. These laws, often called “no-fault,” grant a divorce to a couple even if only one spouse requests it. Marriages can be dissolved easily and for little or no reason. Laws that include this no-fault policy should absolutely not be enforced. The no-fault attitude toward divorce encourages casual actions in marriages. Studies show that divorce rates have increased by 15-25% as a result of no-fault divorce laws. Making it easier for divorces to occur can decrease the quality of a marriage. In general, all marriages go through dark moments, so much so that one of the partners often thinks of comfort through divorce. Instead of resolving problems in a healthy way, divorce through no-fault laws is quickly used to provide an escape route. The breakdown of a family can have many repercussions on individual members with minimal involvement. Children involved in a divorce are often the victims most affected by a divorce. Children with divorced parents often feel neglected by the parent who chose to leave, unloved, and often burdened with guilt. Poverty rates for single-parent families are alarming and are often the result of divorce. With all these factors added together, divorce is a dangerous and upsetting event in a child's psyche. Recently, with no-fault laws, it has been easier to dissolve a marriage for any reason or no reason. In the past, both divorces and marriages had to take place in the form of a liability agreement or contract. Through no-fault laws, however, marriages can be dissolved by the will of just one spouse. Many believe that courts should treat marriages like any other contract and therefore divorce should be considered a breach of a legal agreement. If courts treated business contracts as they treat marriages, and systematically favored the party wishing to withdraw, the direct result would be the collapse or decline of the economy. In conclusion, the lax no-fault divorce laws in our country are contributing to the moral decay of our society and should not be enforced.
