Comparing two women really gives you, as an individual, a peek into each woman's life. Sometimes you may find that they are very similar, while other times you may discover shocking differences. By comparing the Wife of Bath, an elderly pilgrim on her way to Canterbury, and the Fairy Queen, a beautiful and supernatural woman, we discover distinct similarities and differences in their lives. We see similarities in how they view a relationship and their manipulative behaviors. However, we notice differences in their actions, previous relationships, the necessity of their relationships, and their overall appearance. Both women want control in their relationship, but they handle it differently than the other. Each woman displays a unique way of handling situations and possesses different qualities. The Wife of Bath and the Fairy Queen are in control in their relationships with men. The wife believes that a happy marriage is one in which the woman has control and sovereignty over the man. In her prologue she talks about her husbands and how she had always had control over them, it was a necessity for her to enjoy life. The norm in society was for the wife to submit to her husband, as clearly stated in the Bible; his wife denied it and led her life outside the norm. The Wife's story makes clear her belief that women should control the man in marriage. In his story, a knight is given a year to figure out what women want most in a marriage. Towards the end of the year, the knight talks to an old woman who tells him that she will give him the answer if he grants her a request. The old woman gives the knight his answer: "Women desire to have sovereignty both over their home and over their love, and to be in corn...... middle of paper......r drawn, a cloak of meadow dyed deep purple” (France, 557-570). Comparing these two women, we can conclude that although each individual handles situations in different ways and acquires different qualities, these make a person unique; uniqueness must be valorised.
