"To feel a sense of belonging, you must accept yourself and be accepted by others." The concept of belonging can be seen in the associations and relationships made with people and in our interactions with these people. The ideas behind membership include; identity, acceptance and a broader understanding of our position within society. These perspectives of belonging can be seen in the work entitled 'Immigrant Chronicles', and even more so in the poems '10 Mary Street' and 'Felix Skrzynecki' by the Australian poet Peter Skrzynecki. Skrzynecki's poem, 10 Mary Street, provides the reader with great insight into the concept of family ties and our instinctive choice to belong to a home. As such, what is presented is the idea of belonging to a house and the house belonging to a person. Furthermore, the poem shows the narrator's sense of belonging to a family and experiences of both cultural and religious identity, which impact their sense of individual belonging. Furthermore, Skrynecki shows belonging to a culture and heritage through a given space. That is, home is not only their connection to their past life in Europe, but also the central space of belonging in an Australian neighbourhood, suburb and school community. Through the pronoun; 'Us'; the person and their family suggest an intimate relationship and bond through experience and therefore a sense of belonging to a family. For example: "We left", "We lived together" and "We became citizens". Furthermore, through the use of symbolism such as; “The bridge still too narrow” “The factory that was always burning” “Heirs to a key that will open no house” the reader sees the character's experiences of belonging and describes the exclusivity of his belonging. The narrow bridge shows its king...... middle of paper...... uncertain world where they felt comfortable and protected. The house symbolizes the bonding of the family unit during this process of 'fitting in', which presents a positive view of the family belonging to each other and as part of Australian society. Finally, in “Feliks Skrzynecki” we see the relationship between the poet and his father, and their contrasting experiences of belonging to a new land. The poet successfully conveys Feliks as a man who is comfortable, content, and confident in his own identity. In this poem, the concepts of belonging and non-belonging occur within place, family, community and culture. Belonging is an active process that builds a sense of connection through repeated actions. People develop unique connections and affinities with place. Therefore, belonging is an individualized process: people may not be able to feel the same sense of connection as you or me.
