I Love Lucy is a 1950s sitcom consisting of six series, set in Westport, Connecticut. In the series I Love Lucy, Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo otherwise known as Lucy and Ricky are always arguing just like Mr. and Mrs. Mertz; the couple living in their guesthouse. Ethel Mertz and Lucy are best friends and usually accompany each other wherever they go. During each episode of the series, both Ethel and Lucy get into trouble and end up getting caught by their husbands Fred and Ricardo. In this episode titled "Big Sea Fishing"--Discussion--In this episode, humorous techniques such as dramatic irony, situational irony and ridiculous situations are used to create an effect of weaknesses in humans and society . At the beginning of this episode During the end of this episode dramatic irony plays an important role in the final resolution. Lucy wanted to know why she couldn't bathe in her bathtub, so she came up with a plan and blocked the men by calling their room and pretending to be the manager. After finally getting the men out of her hotel room, she went to take a bath but ended up walking straight out of the bathroom. Stunned, she looked at Ethel with a confused expression. “You don't think he could have swum from your pipes to ours, do you?” He was talking about the fish in his bathtub. This is an example of dramatic irony because this tuna was the biggest they could buy, there was no way it could swim through the tubes because it didn't fit. The audience also knows that the fish belongs to their husbands but Lucy and Ethel do not know this. When Ricky looks for his wife, he checks the Mertzes' hotel room and can't find her, he checks the bathroom and finds a... paper medium... they go fishing and the boys agree; leaving the girls amazed at their response. This is an example of ridiculous situations because, to prevent their women from spending more money, they allow them to go fishing even if they can't stand their wives. Even girls want to go fishing with boys so they don't find out how much they spent on beach clothes. A ridiculous situation also occurred when Lucy and Ethel made a bet with Fred and Ricky. The bet was that whoever could catch the biggest fish would owe the other $150. In the end the situation was that both parties purchased a large tuna because they knew they wouldn't catch anything and didn't want to risk losing the bet . This is ridiculous because they made a bet but wanted to cheat because they didn't trust their abilities and didn't want to risk the outcome.
