Cancer is a major problem that scientists, along with US citizens, have been grappling with for many, many years. Cancer continues to grow and grow, forcing many people and their families to suffer consequences no one could have ever imagined. But scientists are constantly working to find a cure that will eliminate this disastrous disease. Cancer begins when cells in one part of the body begin to grow out of control. There are many types of cancer and some may be worse than others, but they all start out the exact same thing, with uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Cancer is actually the second leading cause of death in the United States. In 2008 alone, seven million six million people worldwide died from cancer; which represents thirteen percent of all deaths. An estimated 70% of cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Half of men and one-third of women in the United States will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. Today there are millions of people living or have lived with cancer. Any part of the body can be affected by cancer and, in total, there are more than one hundred types of cancer. One fifth of all cancers in the world are caused by a chronic infection, namely HPV, which causes cervical cancer, and HBV, which causes liver cancer.
