Additionally, the WTO defines free trade agreements, resolves trade disputes between governments, and organizes trade negotiations. (“WTO Profile: Background Information”} Although on paper the promotion of free trade may appear to benefit both developed and developing nations, in practice, the introduction of free trade may only benefit rich and powerful nations. Therefore the World Trade Organization is a clear hindrance as it has been manipulated to serve narrow corporate interests. Secondly, developing countries with poor economies have been completely marginalized by rich, developed nations. WTO passes trade rules that favor only a handful of economies at the expense of others can pressure small poverty-stricken nations to sacrifice the well-being of their population to meet the demands of multinationals A compelling case study that clearly insinuates how the WTO put corporate rights to profit ahead of human rights legislation to encourage breastfeeding and limit the use and abuse of infant formula that has been linked to high infant mortality rates in developing countries.
