Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, commonly called DMD, is a life-threatening disease. There are many different forms of muscular dystrophy, Duchenne being one of the most severe forms. DMD begins to appear at a young age. This particular form of muscular dystrophy is found mainly in males. Duchenne is carried by the mother on the X chromosome but often having this disease is just a "stroke of luck". Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a deadly and unfortunate disease, but new research underway could be the cure many are looking for. The symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy begin to appear at an early age; it usually becomes apparent around age three. Your child may appear to have slow motor skills, have difficulty climbing stairs, and his or her calves may harden and begin to widen. Children often walk on tiptoe as their leg muscles become tense and have difficulty jumping.
