Further ThoughtsI was recently involved in a committee interacting with a website developer regarding the creation of a new university website where I specifically asked them to provide students with learning difficulties and disabilities. Some of the developer's principles on universal design are relevant to Edmodo, including: • The website maintains a consistent design and page layout, meaning logos and links appear in the same place, which is relevant for students who struggle with poor navigation features. • Background color and contrast are simple, obviously tested and available at different resolutions to help visually impaired students or those suffering from color blindness in deciphering text. • Standard HTML is used which can be used across multiple browsers. • The videos have audio or text to help students with hearing difficulties or those who use outdated technology. • Links avoid using the term “click here,” but rather contain text relevant to the link or images such as a library book or house to house. This is also particularly relevant in searches carried out by search engines or software that assist those who are visually impaired. Social networks can often be used as an escape from reality and people portray an ideal rather than a real image of themselves. For example, in Edmodo it's interesting to see the variety of profile pictures students choose and ask them why they do so. Students with learning difficulties/disabilities often feel like they have a label on them and social networking can help them remain anonymous by allowing them to promote other aspects of their identity. These topics are particularly relevant in the discussion of my colleagues in the virtual classroom of Second Life. ...... half of the sheet ......978).
