HARPER, EW FRANCES During the eighteenth century there were many African American slaves and a problem with women's rights. During that time there were people who wrote about literature and the society around them related to slaves. Many people were influenced by what was written during that time. Frances EW Harper was an American poet who was a free slave. Hse wrote about his views on the world. Analysis of Harper's life and poems will show how much she was influenced by her writing. According to biography.com (2014), Frances Harper was the daughter of two free black parents. Frances was born in 1825 on September 24 in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother died when she was three years old and she had to live with her uncle and aunt. Her uncle ran an academy for young Negroes and she attended until she was thirteen. He later “found domestic work in a Quaker family, where he had access to a wide range of literature” (poetryfoundation.org, 2014). Frances soon grew old and taught for two years in Pennsylvania and Ohio. she then became a traveling speaker on the abolitionist circuit. She helped slaves escape via the Underground Railroad and wrote frequently for antislavery newspapers, earning her reputation as the mother of African American journalism” (poetryfoundation.org, 2014). Frances Harper married in 1860. She and her husband had one daughter named Maria, and he raised three children of her own. Frances continued to care for her family after the death of her husband, who died four years after their marriage. To help her during her husband's death, she became involved in lecturing. (2014).
