The History of Crystal Methamphetamine: Amphetamine was found before methamphetamine. It was first created in 1887 in Germany by the Romanian chemist Lazăr Edeleanu. At the time it was called phenylisopropylamine. In 1919, methamphetamine hydrochloride was produced by pharmacologist Akira Ogata via reduction using red phosphorus and iodine. Today, methamphetamine is sold under the name Desoxyn. Statistics: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has estimated that global production of amphetamine-type stimulants, which includes methamphetamine, is about 500 tonnes per year, and there are apparently 24.7 million drug addicts . 4.5% of American high school seniors and 4.1% of 10th grade students reported having used methamphetamine at least once in their lives in 2007. In 2008 approximately 13 million people aged 12 to 12 years have used methamphetamine. Of the 13 million, there were approximately 529,000 regular consumers. The percentage of rehab admissions due to methamphetamine increased from 3% in 1996 to 9% in 2006. States such as Hawaii have a higher percentage of people seeking help (48.2%) due to methamphetamine abuse.
