Same Sex Marriage Jermarious Kirkendoll Amer Gov. 2.00pm There is a lot of controversy about same-sex marriage. Some are in favor of such marriage and others are against it. Personally, I am against same-sex marriage. I think same-sex marriage should not be allowed in the United States. To ban same-sex marriage, an amendment must be passed. To pass an amendment, both houses of Congress must propose the amendment by a two-thirds vote. This is how all the current amendments have been proposed. Additionally, two-thirds of state legislatures must invite Congress to hold a Constitutional Convention. For an amendment to be ratified, three-quarters of the state legislatures must approve the amendment proposed by Congress, and three-quarters of the states must approve the change through ratifying conventions. This method has only been used once, to repeal Prohibition (21st Amendment). Yes, I think we need an amendment to ban same-sex marriage. If an amendment were used to ban such marriage, that would make it unconstitutional. I am not in favor of same-sex marriage. I think same-sex marriage is a sin and that people should avoid living that sinful lifestyle and live right, by God. The amendment states that "marriage between a man and a woman is the the only national legal union that will be valid or recognized". Opponents of the measure ran ads highlighting the impact the language would have on heterosexual North Carolina residents, arguing that the measure would eliminate protections against domestic violence. There are 30 states that ban same-sex marriage. The “Don't ask, don't tell” policy that prevented gays, lesbians, and bisexuals from openly serving in the military was in effect from 1993 to 2011... half of the document... approved by others Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that puts outlawed same-sex marriage, thus overturning the state Supreme Court's decision that gave gay couples the right to marry.
