In terms of prevention, Italy requires a variety of vaccinations across the lifespan from child to adult, which the Italian government strongly recommends. If children start receiving vaccinations at a young age, their chance of contracting a disease decreases significantly. Along with vaccinations, education about general health and disease is vital to prevent the preventable. A growing problem currently in Italy is childhood obesity, as one in three children is overweight (Wilks, J., 2016). This unreported disease is worsening and will soon begin to burden the healthcare system (Koehring, M., 2016). In 2015, the obesity rate in Italy was 48%. With obesity in most cases comes diabetes, the treatment of which costs the healthcare system two and a half times more than for an individual without diabetes. If this continues to increase, taxes on the healthcare system could increase, making it less accessible. In May 2016, a representative of the Italian Senate decided to start a petition to declare obesity as a disease, as this would be more likely to impact change (Koehring, M., 2016). As awareness spreads, it is hoped that the government will establish a program to treat the damage caused by obesity. To cure and prevent a disease it is necessary for authority figures to raise awareness on the topic through education and prevention
