ProhibitionIn the Roaring Twenties the idea of a barren age crossed the minds of many citizens of the United States. During this time, the economy was starting to prosper. While the company was booming, the temperance movement began to cause problems for the system. Most people agreed with the idea that drinking was a bad thing and needed to stop, but they still wanted to drink. Other issues are raised regarding the job losses this ban would cause. Prohibition was created to reform the social behaviors and riot crimes caused by this state of drought which then led to the revocation of the 18th Amendment. Before the temperance movement and the 18th amendment, problems of abuse and overdoses began to occur. A committee called the Anti-Saloon League (ASL) began to care and actually try to end alcohol consumption in the United States. Most Americans reformed to the idea that alcohol was probably not a good thing, even though there were many others who were not in favor of this movement. The temperance movement was created to help improve people's health and promote community well-being. In 1900 it was decided that the biggest threat at the time was alcohol and the only solution was to ban it. “Scientific temperance education” was taught in more than half of all schools teaching children that alcohol is an addictive poison (Blocker). The Prohibition movement was becoming easy to spread to most places because people like Dr. Benjamin Rush were coming up with very persuasive thoughts about the effects of alcohol and how alcohol creates disease, drunkenness, crime, and worst of all, debt (Eighteenth Amendment ).
