Many residents of the United States receive health care through various forms, such as insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare. Medicaid is health care for low-income people, including children, pregnant women, the disabled, the blind, and the elderly (Adams). According to the Congressional Budget Office there are approximately 51 million people covered by Medicaid and this also represents the largest drain on state budgets (Adams). Most countries provide some kind of healthcare, for example Japan is a democratic country that provides healthcare, but it is different from other countries. There are also many interest groups that agree or disagree with Medicaid expansion. The Community Behavioral Health Association of New Hampshire (NH) and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) are two of many interest groups in favor of expanding Medicaid spending, as is RTI International. However, Ohio Right to Life and Cleveland Right to Life are interest groups that oppose Medicaid expansion. The NH Community Behavioral Health Association is an organization made up of ten mental health centers that serve people living with or recovering from a mental illness or emotional disorder. Their goal is to raise awareness of the crucial role mental health centers play in ensuring public health and safety (“Who We Are”). They strongly support Medicaid expansion for three main reasons. The first is that it will help improve access to substance abuse treatment and mental health care. Secondly, it will help address equality issues. Third, it will help maintain New Hampshire's community-based mental health system (Leubsdorf). The main goal of the American Association of Retired Persons is to prevent the expense...half of the card...from being able to pay. It can help increase and encourage those receiving Medicaid benefits to visit doctors and help protect their health, as they will not have the burden of not being able to pay. The most important reason why I believe that Medicaid should be expanded is because it helps many infants and children receive medical care even if their parents are unable to provide it, but must meet the requirements to receive Medicaid. There are many people in the United States who receive Medicaid Benefits. It supports children, pregnant women, the blind, the disabled and the elderly. Many groups and organizations approve or disapprove of Medicaid expansion. This has been a very contentious debate over the years, and many politicians favor expanding Medicaid. Medicaid has provided many medical benefits and continues to provide them to many in need, especially families.
