Hamlet was produced as a film as early as the 1920s. Compared to that blockbuster, Branagh's version came seven years later: an arthouse film with himself as the protagonist. The 1990s Hamlet was set in a medieval castle in Scotland. This is reflected in the darkness of the rooms, the layout and furnishings of the rooms.
